So, when they want to play basketball or football, my inclination might be to say no because I'm tired or there are chores to be done. But I realize it's in my best interest, aligned with my most important priorities, to be active in their life, while making memories along the way."

  • 30/10 Planning: This approach involves dedicating 30 minutes each week and 10 minutes daily to planning and prioritizing tasks. It's about focusing on what needs to be done both personally and professionally, ensuring that nothing important is overlooked.
  • Not-To-Do List: Melissa emphasizes the importance of recognizing tasks that do not align with one's goals or values. Keeping a not-to-do list helps maintain focus on priorities and avoid distractions.
  • Maintaining Routines: Establishing solid morning and nighttime routines helps mark the boundary between work and personal time. For Melissa, these routines are sacred, ensuring she begins and ends her day with clarity and purpose.

Living by Example

Reflecting on her own practices, Melissa reveals that her commitment to work-life balance has evolved into a disciplined approach. "I don't have to actively think about it as much now," she shares. This discipline has led her to establish clear priorities for each segment of her life, enabling her to stay focused without being easily distracted.

Through her planning strategy, dedicating 30 minutes each week to outline her key personal and professional objectives, ensuring she's prepared for the week ahead. Daily, she invests 10 minutes to pinpoint the most critical tasks of the day. This method helps her maintain a laser focus on what truly matters, avoiding the pitfall of becoming overwhelmed by the ins and outs of daily life. "It's about knowing what my priorities are at any given time," Melissa explains, "and making sure I'm giving my energy to those priorities."

Recent statistics from the American Psychological Association's (APA) 2023 Work in America Survey revealed that a staggering 92% of workers emphasize the importance of working for organizations that value their emotional and psychological well-being and respect the boundaries between work and nonwork time. Melissa emphasizes the importance of organizations actively participating in the cultivation of work-life balance among their employees.  She advocates for clear boundaries and encourages employees to fully utilize their Paid Time Off (PTO) without hesitation, as it's essential for mental refreshment and personal fulfillment. 

Further, Melissa advises organizations to be mindful of their scheduling practices. For example, by avoiding meetings early on Monday mornings and late on Friday afternoons, you allow your team to start their week with focus and end it with a sense of closure and accomplishment. Melissa emphasizes the importance of creating a culture where employees feel their voices are heard and their needs are respected. She suggests offering flexible work arrangements, like remote work options or adjustable hours, to better meet the diverse needs and preferences of the workforce. This approach not only respects individual circumstances but also contributes to a more satisfied and engaged team.

The Impact of Technology

While acknowledging the benefits of technology in creating efficiencies, Melissa also warns of its potential to disrupt work-life harmony. The constant availability and the temptation to multitask can detract from focused, meaningful work and personal time.
