Taking the Cedar Valley to the East Coast

Last week, Lisa and I packed our bags and set off for a whirlwind business development trip to New York and New Jersey. Our mission? To put the Cedar Valley on the radar of companies considering expansion, from food processing to advanced manufacturing.
We met with a variety of businesses, as well as a site consultant, and the conversations all pointed to one thing: momentum. The site consultant we spoke with predicted a significant uptick in stateside expansion in the coming months. Businesses echoed that sentiment, sharing their own aspirations for growth and their interest in Midwest markets—especially those like ours, where a central location, affordability, and strong workforce make for an ideal business climate.
Of course, we spent plenty of time providing a little geography lesson (yes, Iowa is in the Midwest, and no, it’s not just cornfields). We talked taxes, infrastructure, and workforce, but most importantly, we listened. Understanding the needs and concerns of expanding businesses allows us to tailor our approach and ensure that the Cedar Valley stands out as a top contender for investment.
Navigating across boroughs and bouncing between meetings, Lisa and I managed to stay (mostly) on course. A few wrong turns? Maybe. But the conversations we had were well worth it. This work—actively marketing our region, building relationships, and staying engaged in the conversation—is a core part of what we do at Grow Cedar Valley on behalf of our businesses and community. It’s not new; it’s been a priority for a long time. For the Cedar Valley to thrive, we have to stay proactive in ensuring we’re always part of the discussion when companies consider expansion. While state partnerships are valuable, direct outreach like this ensures that the Cedar Valley isn’t just a line on a map—it’s a viable, attractive option for investment.
Bringing business to the Cedar Valley takes boots on the ground, and last week, we covered plenty of ground. Now, the real work begins—following up, continuing the dialogue, and making sure these connections turn into opportunities.
