Strengthening Local Business Through Legislative Engagement

Grow Cedar Valley - Advocacy

Supporting local businesses strengthens the entire community. That’s why Grow Cedar Valley is expanding Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) efforts across the region. BRE visits help businesses grow by identifying opportunities and resolving challenges early. They provide support for expansion, guidance on regulatory processes, and assistance in securing essential resources like utilities. These visits also strengthen connections between businesses and local agencies, making it easier to navigate government requirements. By creating opportunities for collaboration and problem-solving, BRE visits help businesses succeed and contribute to the local economy. Feedback from BRE visits also help shape resources, policies, and advocacy efforts that directly impact the local economy.

Keeping a strong connection with policymakers is essential to this work. Grow Cedar Valley staff stay informed on legislative developments through weekly calls, daily policy updates, and regular trips to Des Moines, where they discuss key issues like property tax reform, tax credit programs, and affordable housing. Workforce development remains a priority, with ongoing support for economic programs at Hawkeye Community College and the University of Northern Iowa. In a recent meeting with the Governor’s staff, we discussed upcoming legislation, including property tax revisions, adjustments to tax credit programs, and early insights on the Department of Government Efficiency. These conversations help ensure local business needs are part of broader policy decisions.

Beyond legislative meetings, Grow Cedar Valley staff also attended Iowa Economic Development Board meetings to advocate for local business expansion projects. In January and February, we supported International Paper and Hydrite Chemical in their applications for the High-Quality Jobs Program. Together, these projects are expected to bring $280 million in investment and 110 new jobs to the Cedar Valley.

Grow Cedar Valley is here to support your business through BRE visits. Whether you need resources, help overcoming challenges, or guidance for growth, these visits connect you with the right solutions. They also provide an opportunity to share any legislative concerns that may impact your business, ensuring your voice is heard in policy discussions. To schedule a visit, contact Adrienne Miller, Director of Business Services and Advocacy, at adrienne@growcedarvalley.com or call 319-232-1156 ext. 4909.
