The University of Northern Iowa has announced a benefit for new and incoming out-of-state students, UNI’s Neighboring State Rate. Starting in the 2025-26 academic year, students from Iowa and its six neighboring states-Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin-will pay an estimated $10,201 in tuition and fees. This new Neighboring State Rate, pending approval by the Iowa Board of Regents, offers a significant cost reduction for out-of-state students, lowering tuition by more than $12,000 per year compared to the standard non-resident rate.

“This is an exciting development for students and their families across the region,” UNI President Mark Nook said. “We anticipate that UNI’s Neighboring State Rate will attract even more talented students to our campus to take advantage of the wide variety of academic programs we offer, at an even more affordable price.”

By drawing in students from neighboring states and providing them with an excellent education at an affordable and competitive cost, UNI plays a vital role in attracting young professionals to the area who will choose to build their careers and lives in the Cedar Valley.

“Bringing more students to UNI means more young people have the chance to experience everything the Cedar Valley has to offer, ” said Grow Cedar Valley President and CEO Katy Susong. “During their time here, we hope they see the abundant opportunities, the supportive community, and choose to call the Cedar Valley home after graduation. This matters not just for the students, but for our local businesses and communities that rely on a strong, talented workforce to grow and succeed.”
